How to Pack, Seal, and Ship a Mailer

Whether you’re a small business owner, an online seller, or simply sending a gift to a loved one, knowing the ins and outs of packing, sealing, and shipping can ensure your items arrive safely and in perfect condition.

Let’s walk you through the steps for packing, sealing, and shipping your items using mailers, shall we?

1. Choose the Right Mailer

The first step is choosing the right mailer for your product’s protection needs. Mailers come in many styles, including:

Consider the size, shape, weight, and fragility of your items when choosing the right mailer.

2. Prep Your Item

Before packing your mailer, the second step is to make sure your item’s prepped to withstand the coming journey. Here’s a few packaging tips:

  • Add a little style (and extra cushioning) by wrapping items in tissue paper.
  • Fill empty spaces and prevent movement by using packing peanuts or newspaper.
  • Wrap multiple items individually or consider using plastic bags to keep them separate.

3. Pack the Mailer

Step number three is packing the item in your chosen mailer. Here’s a few packing tips:

  • Slide the item in on its flattest side to avoid stressing the mailer walls.
  • If one end of the item is bigger or heavier than the other, put that end in first to avoid stressing the mailer flap once you seal it.

4. Seal the Mailer

Properly sealing the mailer is step number four, and a crucial but easy one. Most mailers have a self-adhesive strip for easy closure. All you do is peel it off, fold over the flap, and press it down. Now you’re ready to move onto shipping.

  • No self-adhesive strip? Fold down the flap and use packing tape.

5. Ship the Mailer

The last step is shipping the mailer, and it all depends on how you like to operate.

If you’ve got the right tools at home (a ruler, postal scale, blank labels, and a printer), you can often buy and print your shipping labels at home. Otherwise, head into your favourite delivery courier’s store and ship your mailer from there (they’ll do the measuring and weighing for you).
